About
Dr Xu is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Aeronautical and Aviation Engineering at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU).
He received his PhD in Systems Engineering from The University of Hong Kong, his Master’s degree in Systems Engineering and Bachelor’s degree in Automation from Huazhong University of Science and Technology, and a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Wuhan University.
Prior to joining PolyU, he served as an Assistant Professor at Harbin Institute of Technology, Shenzhen, a Research Fellow at Nanyang Technological University, a Research Assistant at City University of Hong Kong, and an intern at the Institute of Automation, Chinese Academy of Sciences.

My PhD students, Qu Changsheng and Zhu Zhengxiong, presented two of our works at POMS China 2026 (Xi'an): "Scalable Deep Reinforcement Learning for Multi-USV Multi-UAV Offshore Wind Farm Inspection with Uncertain Inspection Time" and "Human-Autonomy Fleet Composition in Service Networks with Disturbance Propagation."

Dr Xu gave a talk on "Human-Autonomy Teaming in Smart Logistics" at Human-algorithm interaction workshop 2026. Held at Saïd Business School, University of Oxford, the workshop provides a global platform to explore how humans and AI systems can meaningfully collaborate across decisions, domains, and disciplines.

Dr Xu has been awarded the 2025 Innovation Research Fund from the COMAC-PolyU Research Institute for Large Aircraft (RILA) for the project “Intelligent Maintenance Decision Modeling for Aircraft under Uncertainty across the Full Life Cycle.” This joint industry-academia initiative, conducted in close partnership with COMAC, aims to enhance predictive maintenance strategies and operational safety for large aircraft.

Dr Xu has been invited to joined the Editorial Board of Humanities and Social Sciences Communications, Nature's premier journal in the humanities and social sciences. The journal ranks #1 in the Humanities, Multidisciplinary category (JCR, among 411 journals) and holds Q1 status in both SSCI and A&HCI.

Our paper entitled "Scalable Bi-level Reinforcement Learning for Multi-robot Coverage Path Planning in Unseen Environments with Obstacles" has been accepted for publication in IEEE Internet of Things Journal. Mr. Qu Changsheng (PhD student) is the first author of this work. Congratulations to him on this achievement!

Award
The Final Year Project team supervised by Dr Xu (Cheng Yung, Meng Junkai, and Yang Zixi) has received the Excellence Award at the HKIE LTD Best Student Papers Awards 2025-2026 for their research on UAV-based emergency medical delivery infrastructure design.
